Tyler Horne’s RBI single to right field in the bottom of the eighth lifted visiting Oneonta High to an 8-7 Southern Tier Athletic Conference baseball victory over visiting Owego on Friday.
It marked the third one-run victory this season for the Yellowjackets (7-5, 6-5).
Kragh Delello doubled down the left-field ling with one out. After Josh Garufi walked, both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Peter Brunetta was intentionally walked, setting up Horne’s lined to single to right against a drawn-in infield.
The Yellowjackets rallied for three runs in the seventh inning off of Owego standout Matt Marsili, who threw a three-hitter with 15 strikeouts in Owego’s 8-1 win over OHS on April 9.
Garufi led off with a single. After an out, Horne walked on a 3-2 pitch. Winning pitcher Bennett Eggler then blooped a single into left to score Garufi.
A wild pitch moved Horne to third and Eggler to second.
Following a strikeout, Brock Eichler hit a grounder up the middle. Owego’s shortstop got to it, but Eichler beat the play at first.
Horne scored and Eggler never slowed around third and scored ahead of the throw on a bang-bang play at the plate to tie the score at 7.
“I was sending him,” OHS coach Joe Hughes said. “We took our chances there. It was good base-running and we were able to make the right decision. It was the big play of the game. It was great hustle by Brock to beat the play at first. He hustled down the line. Eggler was running from the get-go and beat the return throw to the plate.”
Second baseman Horne also had an RBI single in the fifth inning that narrowed OHS’ deficit to 7-4 and made a key defensive play in the eighth inning, throwing a runner out from the seat of his pants with runners on first and second.
