OHS baseball shut out by Saints; Sidney tops Hancock, 9-5

Mike Korchak struck out 12 in a three-hitter to lead Seton Catholic Central to a 6-0 Southern Tier Athletic Conference baseball victory over Oneonta on Monday at NYSEG Stadium.

“We battled him well at the plate, but he’s a quality pitcher,” Oneonta coach Joe Hughes said of Korchak. “We had some decent at-bats, but he proved to be too much throughout the game.”

Neil McCormack hit an RBI triple off of losing pitcher Kragh Delello to give the Saints a 1-0 lead in the first inning. McCormack also had an RBI double that capped the scoring in the sixth inning.

“They squared the ball up as well as anyone we’ve seen this year,” Hughes said of the defending Class C state champion Saints, who finished with 11 hits. “Every ball they hit seemed to be a line drive.”

Josh Garufi hit a two-out triple to right in the first inning but was stranded at third.

Oneonta (7-6, 6-6) will travel to Chenango Forks today.

Sidney 9, Hancock 5

Winning pitcher Billy Kozak hit two home runs, the latter a two-run shot to left that snapped a 4-all tie in the fourth inning, to lead visiting Sidney in the Midstate Athletic Conference.

Kozak’s first homer came in the third inning. He finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, and Alex Hoskins had two hits RBIs, Jon Gorshack finished with two hits and an RBI, and Anthony Ruling had two hits and scored twice for Sidney.

Eli Holton’s two-run homer to right-center in the first inning gave Hancock a 2-0 lead. Lane Bass contributed a home run in the fourth inning that narrowed Hancock’s deficit to 6-5.

Holton finished with two hits for the Wildcats (11-4, 8-3), who will host Harpursville on Friday.

Unatego 3, Greene 1

Seth Burnham struck out 10 in a four-hitter to lead visiting Unatego to a Midstate Athletic Conference victory.
