OHS softball downs SCC again

STAFF REPORT

Bekka Struble and Mia Obergefell each had two hits and an RBI to lead host Oneonta High to a 5-3 Southern Tier Athletic Conference softball victory over visiting Seton Catholic Central on Tuesday.

Winning pitcher Brieanna Baker beat the Saints for the second straight day. The Yellowjackets downed the Saints, 8-2, on the road Monday.

Baker struck out seven and walked six in a six-hitter.

Baker led off the first inning with a walk and then stole two bases. Obergefell’s squeeze bunt scored Baker to tie the score at 1.

Struble, who hit a three-run home run Monday, contributed an RBI single later in the inning to give the Yellowjackets a 2-1 lead.

After SCC tied the score in the second inning, OHS took a 3-2 lead in the third inning as Michelle Rossi scored on an error.

‘‘We ran the bases well and forced some errors by Seton,’’ Oneonta coach Randy Brockway said. Seton CC made six errors.

Baker had a hit and scored two runs for Oneonta (10-4, 9-4), which will visit Chenango Forks on Thursday.

Catherine Johnson took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and finished with 18 strikeouts as host Edmeston cruised in the Tri-Valley League.

“She was actually doing well with catching them with offspeed stuff a lot,” Edmeston coach Ken Plows said of Johnson, who walked five in a two-hitter. “She threw her changeup a lot and worked the outside part of the plate.”

Courtney Hogan broke up Johnson’s no-hitter with a single to right with one out in the seventh. Monica Ridgeway followed with a single to center, but Johnson retired the final two batters.

Sarah Lawrence hit a two-run homer to right-center in the third inning. She finished 2-for-2 with four runs scored. Sydney Smith and Dana Eschler had two hits apiece for the Panthers (9-0, 9-0), who will host Morris today.
