You Said It!

O-State’s Speranzi is the best

I was fortunate enough to play softball at Oneonta State for John Speranzi from 2001-2005. In those four years, I developed a very close, personal friendship with him that has continued, even as I am approaching my 10-year reunion.

I want to congratulate the softball team and first-year coach Sara Headley on reviving the program and winning the SUNYAC championship. Way to go ladies!

I also want to express my sincere congratulations to a man who has been with this program for the last 25 years. This man is one a kind.

As a freshman, he looks out for you and helps that transition away from your parents a bit easier. He calls to make sure you’re not homesick. If you are, he’ll go that extra mile to make you feel better. He’s still like my second father.

Over the past 25 years, there have been five softball coaches and some challenging seasons, but he has been the one constant. We all know and love his “Speranzi-isms,” such as “Less flash and more dash” or my favorite, “Are you a pretender or contender?” Without his passion and dedication, many of us would not have been half the players we were. He developed us as players, impacted our lives and shaped our futures.

I want to celebrate a man who has been a constant for the softball program and in my life. He celebrated his 500th career win and another SUNYAC title, and I hope he and Coach Headley share many more championship runs.

Speranzi, I couldn’t be happier for your success this season. You truly are a warrior and full of dedication and integrity. I am truly blessed to have you in my life. Thank you for all you have done for your past, current and future players.
