Brieanna Baker struck out 15 and walked two in a one-hitter, and Oneonta High scored single runs in the fifth and sixth inning to beat visiting Susquehanna Valley, 2-0, in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference softball game Tuesday.
“She struggled a bit yesterday (in a 7-6 victory over Chenango Valley), but she bounced back well,” OHS coach Randy Brockway said of Baker, who also scored the Yellowjackets’ first run in the fifth inning. “She controlled the strike zone for most of the game. I thought she handled them pretty well and they have some pretty good hitters.”
SV’s hit came on a single to right-center by Abigail Finch with two outs in the fifth inning.
Baker led off Oneonta’s fifth inning with a walk. She stole second and third, and scored when catcher Gina Correll’s throw to third went into left field.
“The thing about BB is she’s so fast on the base paths,” Brockway said. “When she gets on, it’s almost like giving up a double or a triple. Not many catchers can throw her out.”
Three errors helped the Yellowjackets to their run in the sixth inning. Aiyana Roupp singled to lead off. Ceili Getman then grounded to second. Courtesy runner Michelle Rossi was tagged out, but the throw to first was wild and Getman wound up on second. Deseray Thomas then hit an infield single to short. Getman went to third and Thomas wound up on second on a throwing error.
Getman scored on a throwing error after a groundball to second by Ally Baker.
Thomas finished 2-for-3 for the Yellowjackets (13-4, 12-4), who will travel to Maine-Endwell on Monday.
