Two-out rally lifts Unatego over Oxford

STAFF REPORT

Seth Burnham threw a four-hitter and Ethan Barber’s RBI single in the sixth inning scored the go-ahead run as Unatego won, 2-1, over Oxford in the Midstate Athletic Conference 1-4 baseball consolation game Wednesday at Field 6 in Neahwa Park.

With two outs in the sixth inning, Tanner Winchester singled and went to third on Lucas DeJoy’s single. Barber followed with a single to left that scored Winchester to make it 2-1.

Burnham struck out four and walked two.

“His control improved tonight and he had good pop on his fastball,” Unatego coach Frank Microni said of Burnham.

Unatego’s defense turned two 6-4-3 double plays and DeJoy threw out three runners attempting to steal second base.

“It’s nice to see us rolling 6-4-3 double plays,” Microni said.

Jake DeJoy’s RBI groundout in the second inning scored Kyle Spaulding with Unatego’s first run.

Losing pitcher Cameron Heggie struck out five and walked none in a five-hitter.

Unatego (11-8) will host Cooperstown at 11 a.m. Saturday. On Tuesday, the Spartans will host Unadilla Valley in a first-round game of the Section Four Class C tournament.
