Unbeaten Gilboa repeats in Delaware League

ONEONTA — Before last season, Gilboa’s softball program had never won a Delaware League title.

Now, the Wildcats have two in a row.

Allison McGuire struck out 10 and walked one in a five-hitter to lead unbeaten Gilboa to an 11-2 victory over Windham in the Delaware League Championship on Thursday at Neahwa Park.

‘‘I tried to move the ball around and limit their hitting,’’ McGuire said. ‘‘I knew they were a good team.’’

It marks the second straight season Gilboa beat Windham in the final. Last year, the Wildcats won, 7-1.

Shelby Oliver went 3-for-5 and had three RBIs. Her RBI double in the first inning scored Jana Traver to give Gilboa a 1-0 lead. Traver walked, stole second and advanced to third on a bunt.

Later in the inning, Skylie Roberts’ two-run single increased Gilboa’s lead to 3-0.

Oliver hit an RBI single and Hope Cooper contributed a two-run single in the second inning as Gilboa took a 6-0 advantage.

‘‘I’m very happy,” said McGuire, who also earned the pitching victory in last year’s DL final. “We get hits like that every game. It definitely takes the pressure off.’’

Windham scored in the third inning, when Emily Valerio’s RBI single scored Sonam Sherpa to make it 7-1.

Sophia Jaeger moved Valerio to second on a sacrifice bunt, but McGuire struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

Jane Rion led off Windham’s fourth inning with a walk and stole second. After McGuire struck out the next two batters, Rion moved to third on a passed ball and scored on an error to make it 7-2.

Traver finished 2-for-5, including a two-run double in the fifth inning that put Gilboa ahead, 9-2. One batter later, Oliver hit an RBI single to make it 10-2.

‘‘We were patient at the plate and worked to get a couple of good pitches that we drove to the outfield,’’ Gilboa coach Dan McGlynn said.
