Hartwick programs open with losses

Preseason All-American Jared Suderley fell one rebound shy of a double-double Friday as the Hartwick College men’s basketball team opened its season with an 84-77 loss to SUNY Purchase in the first round of the Regis Tip-Off Tournament.

Suderley made 9 of 22 shots from the floor en route to 21 points, matching Purchase’s Craig Davis for game-high scoring honors. Kyle Bradley contributed 20 points for the Hawks, going 8-for-13 from the floor and 4-for-4 at the foul line.

Laurens graduate Aaron Laing went 1-for-1 from the field and 2-for-2 at the free throw line for four points. He also grabbed four rebounds for Hartwick, which faced a 39-35 deficit at halftime.

Joel Neri scored 20 points for Purchase, which received 14 from Amar Reynolds.

Hartwick, which has reached the NCAA Division III Tournament the last two seasons, will play tournament host Regis College in the consolation game at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Scranton 62, O-State 55

Freshman forward Jackson Zuvic scored a game-high 21 points, but Oneonta State started its season with a first-round loss to the host school in the Radisson Invitational at Scranton.

Zuvic went 9-for-14 from the floor, including 3-for-4 from three-point range. He also had seven rebounds.

Sophomore guard Zach Mager contributed 14 points and game-highs of 16 rebounds and six assists for the Red Dragons, who took a 32-28 lead into halftime.

Travis Farrell and Ross Danzig scored 17 points apiece for the 18th-ranked Royals, who went on a 13-0 run to turn a 44-41 deficit with 11:13 left into a 54-44 advantage with 3:37 remaining.

The Red Dragons will play York at 2 p.m. Saturday in the consolation game.

Cobleskill 103, N.E. 94

Mike Marcelin and Unatego graduate Travis Woods led SUNY Cobleskill to a season-opening victory over the host school in the first round of the New England College Tip-Off Tournament.
