Clyde Cole Tournament

Austin Ryan, Kevin Thayer, Leland Slawson and Ryan Marszal won championships Saturday to lead Unatego to a second-place finish in the 12-team Clyde Cole Tournament at Oxford.

A state-tournament qualifier at 120 pounds last season, Ryan earned a 13-6 decision over Cooperstown’s Mikey Boyle in the 126-pound title match.

Thayer started a run of three straight Unatego crowns with a 5-2 decision over Averill Park’s Tyler Moses at 152 pounds.

Slawson followed with a 9-7 decision over Queensbury’s Franky Nassivera in the 160-pound final, and Marszal earned a 6-1 title decision over Queensbury’s Bryce Breault at 170.

Codie Nichols (145) and Riley Hanrahan (182) contributed runner-up finishes for the Spartans, who amassed 193 points to finish second by 2.5 over Oxford. Averill Park won the team title with 200.5 points.

Jesse Griswold and Mark Viviano won championships for sixth-place Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton (153 points).

Griswold cruised to an 8-0 victory over AP’s Cody Meissner in the 132-pound final and Viviano pinned Harpursville’s Brendon VanEtten with one second left in the 195-pound championship match.

B-G/A’s Justin Cirigliano dropped a 5-0 decision to Norwich’s Tristan Rifanburg in the 138-pound final.

Unatego visits Delhi on Wednesday.

Saber Invitational

Sidney sophomore Austin Dean went 4-0 at 285 pounds to earn Most Oustanding Wrestler honors for the upper weight classes (152-285) during the Saber Invitational at Susquehanna Valley.

Dean capped his run to the title with a 10-2 major decision over Tioga’s Zach Kelsey, giving the Warriors their third champion as Dylan Gifford (145 pounds) and Nicholas Jump (160) also finished first.

Jump pinned SV’s Austin Tingley in the 160-pound final to finish a 3-0 day. Gifford also went 3-0, beating Oneonta High’s James Longo, 9-2, in the 145-pound title match.

Sidney earned 149 points to place third in the nine-team tournament, behind winner Vestal (227 points) and Tioga (168).
