Ruff leads four OHS all-state soccer picks

Nicosia, who also is a key starter for the girls basketball team, had 13 goals and 13 assists for 39 points.

Emily Tucker earned Class B Player of the Year honors for Greece Odyssey, which also had the state’s Class B Coach of the Year in Nino Pilato.

Area scoring leader Sarah Mannina and Unatego teammate Katrina Clark made the first and second teams in Class C, respectively.

Senior forward Mannina had 60 points on an area-best 24 goals and 12 assists for the Midstate Athletic Conference and Section Four Class C champion Spartans, who ended an 18-1-1 season with a 2-0 state-quarterfinal loss to Section Three’s Sauquoit Valley. Mannina made the Fourth Team last season.

Clark received her first all-state nod after a 26-point season, on 10 goals and six assists. Like Miller, senior midfielder Clark was Unatego’s shutdown player on defense.

Franklin’s Haley Downin and Jordan Beers received First Team accolades in Class D after leading the Purple Devils (15-3-1) to a share of the Section Four title with Morris and a state-quarterfinal appearance.

Senior goalie Downin helped Franklin secure its first sectional soccer crown by holding Morris to two goals in a penalty-kick shootout that determined who advanced to the state tournament, after the teams played to a 1-1 overtime tie. The Purple Devils won the shootout, 3-2, then fell, 4-1, to Section Three’s Poland in a state quarterfinal.

Junior midfielder Beers’ 53 points – on 23 goals and seven assists – ranked second this past soccer season. Beers also is a basketball standout, following a Third Team all-state honor as a freshman with a Second Team selection last season. Beers led area girls basketball players in scoring both times, with 25.8 points per game as a sophomore and 21.2 ppg as a freshman.

Class D’s Third Team in girls soccer includes Downsville’s Kaileen Townsend, Davenport’s Sarah Haight and Morris’ Kelsea Webster.
