Hartwick College added a former Division II assistant coach to its staff Wednesday, when the Hawks announced the hiring of Jackie Rutkowski to take over their women’s lacrosse program.

Hartwick relayed via email that, effective Aug. 1, Rutkowski will replace Rachel Dell, who accepted the head coaching position at John Carroll University in May.

Rutkowski helped her alma mater, D-II Indiana University of Pennsylvania, to a 13-3 record last season. IUP finished with the No. 12 national ranking among D-II programs after reaching the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference semifinals for the second straight season. It also set a program record for single-season victories.

Rutkowski assisted PSAC Coach of the Year Mindy Richmond last season. Before that, Rutkowski served Albion College (Mich.) as the D-III program’s first head coach, from 2009-12.

As a player at IUP, Rutkowski graduated as the program’s all-time leader in points (192) and assists (58). She also ranked second in goals scored (134).

Rutkowski graduated from IUP in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education. She earned a master’s degree in recreation and sport sciences in 2009 from Ohio University.

On Monday, Hartwick announced that Matt Pohren will serve the Hawks as an assistant athletic director and as the head coach of their men’s and women’s cross country teams.

Pohren, whose hiring takes effect July 15, was the assistant cross country coach at D-I Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., in from 2010-11.

A Northwest Missouri State University graduate, Pohren assisted the Bearcats’ cross country and track and field programs from 2007-10. He also served as the department’s compliance assistant and senior marketing manager before being named interim assistant athletic director for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Pohren competed in cross country and track and field at Northwest from 2003-07. He was a two-time NCAA D-II Academic All-American and a six-time Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association All-Conference performer in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track.

Pohren graduated from Northwest in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in business management. He earned a master’s in health and physical education in 2010.
