Green Wave strands 11, falls at home to Oxford-Norwich, 5-3

 STAFF REPORT

Visiting Oxford-Norwich scored five times over the final two innings to beat Oneonta Post 259, 5-3, in a District Six Legion baseball game Monday.

Justin Lindenthaler hit a two-run single during Oxford-Norwich’s three-run sixth inning that gave the visitors a 3-1 lead.

Noah Sheehan brought the Green Wave to 3-2 with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.

But Colby Griffin hit a two-run single in the top of the seventh to make it 5-2.

Winning pitcher Ben Barnes walked the first four Oneonta hitters in the seventh, the last of which forced home a run to make it 5-3. Barnes then struck out the next hitter before inducing a 4-6-3 double play to end it.

Barnes, who pitched for Mohawk Valley Community College in the spring, finished with 11 walks and five strikeouts in a four-hitter.

“We left boatloads of people on base,” Oneonta coach Mike Jester said of his team, which stranded 11 runners. “In crucial spots, we just didn’t get the big hits.”

Mark Giallanzo started for defending District Six champion Oneonta but lasted just three batters before leaving with pain in his right elbow. Kragh Delello relieved and limited O-N to five hits over five-plus innings. He struck out four and walked two.

“He pitched well and gave us a chance,” Jester said of Delello, who took the loss. “We just couldn’t generate any offense.”

Zach Pidgeon’s RBI single in the third inning gave Oneonta a 1-0 lead.

Sheehan had two hits for Oneonta (13-12, 5-2), which will travel to Montrose, Pa., at 6 p.m. today.
