Outlaws down Salt Cats, 6-4

Newark 2, Cooperstown 1

Eann Cox struck out 12, walked one and did not allow an earned run over nine innings, but Cooperstown lost Saturday at home in 11 innings.

Newark’s Marshall Harden drew a bases-loaded walk with two out off of losing pitcher Travis Tarleton to score Scott Matthews with the winning run. Matthews doubled with one out in the 11th. He went to third on a groundout before the next two Newark batters were intentionally walked.

The Pilots tied the score at 1 in the ninth. Matthews reached with one out on an error by shortstop Ryan Hanahan. After Sam Fox singled, Max Rosing’s single scored Matthews.

Hanahan’s bases-loaded walk in the second scored Cooperstown’s run. Cameron Day singled to start the inning and went to second on a groundout. Nolan Ray walked, and both runners moved up on an infield single by Josh Wyant with two out.

Wyant finished with two of Cooperstown’s seven hits.

Sidney goes 3-0

Sidney’s Legion squad went 3-0 during the Ken Burch Memorial, a wood-bat tournament in Vermont on Saturday and Sunday.

Sidney advanced to the championship game at Castleton State College against the Foothills Thunder out of Glens Falls, but the game was called after four innings because of rain. The score was tied at 0, with Sidney’s Dan Shelton having allowed no hits. Sidney and Glens Falls were declared co-champions.

In its semifinal, Sidney defeated the Vermont Outlaws, 7-1, on Sunday. Winning pitcher Quinn Barnhart threw a no-hitter with seven strikeouts and three walks. Barnhart also went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

During pool play Saturday, Sidney defeated Granville, Vt., 7-5, and the Montreal Titans, 9-4.

Against Granville, Sidney scored three times in the sixth to take a 7-5 lead. Zack Decker’s RBI double tied the score at 5 and Dylan VanPelt followed with a two-run single. Van Pelt finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Decker had two RBIs.
