Area athletes Ryan Crean of Laurens and Kyle Jaquay of Cherry Valley-Springfield are among 20 state finalists for the New York Wendy’s High School Heisman Award, which will be announced this week.

Soccer players Crean and Jaquay were selected from 1,241 New York applicants and, as finalists, are recognized as athletes who “embody the Heisman spirit of hard work and dedication through their outstanding achievements in athletics, academics and community/school leadership,” according to a media release. A total of 45,000 seniors applied nationwide.

One male and one female will be selected as a state winner this week and have a chance to become one of 12 national finalists who will travel to New York City and be featured during a televised ceremony on ESPN networks. National finalists will receive gold medals and $2,000 in awards for their respective high schools.

The program will then select one male and one female national winner. Each will receive a crystal trophy and a $500 gift certificate to Wendy’s, which also will donate $10,000 to their respective high schools.

The national winners will be recognized during an ESPN broadcast Dec. 8.

Crean and Jaquay became state finalists after winning school awards. Other local school winners were Oneonta High’s Cami Cleaveland and Hunter-Tannersville classmates Troy Bates and Sarah Murin.
