Cooperstown rallies late for baseball win

Staff Report

Nico Knull singled home the go-ahead run in the seventh and Ethan Bliss struck out the final two batters with two on in the bottom of the inning as visiting Cooperstown beat Westmoreland, 2-1, Monday in a Center State Conference baseball game.

With the score tied at 1, Park Summers singled to start Cooperstown’s seventh. After two strikeouts, Summers stole second. Knull then singled into left-center and Summers slid in ahead the tag to make it 2-1.

Bliss struck out the first batter in the bottom of the seventh. He then allowed a wind-blown single and a bad-hop single to put runners on first and second before striking out the final two batters.

“He had a solid day,” Cooperstown coach Frank Miosek said of Oswego State-bound Bliss, who struck out six and walked two in a three-hitter. “He had a good fastball, good location and a curveball when he needed it.”

Cooperstown (2-1, 2-1) took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Bliss and James Johnson walked to start the inning. Then with two outs, freshman Scott Curtis singled to center to score Bliss. It marked Curtis’ first varsity hit.

Kyle Doolen and Jack Acquaviva combined on a three-hitter for Westmoreland (4-1, 3-1).

Cooperstown will travel to Waterville on Wednesday.
