Kelby leads charge as OHS tennis wins at home

Emerson Kelby, Stijn van Pel and Aaron Earle-Richardson won singles matches in straight sets as Oneonta High defeated visiting Owego, 5-2, in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference tennis match Monday.

Kelby beat Tommy West, 6-0, 6-1, at first singles.

The Yellowjackets’ first doubles team of Boru Jerry Li and Griffin Rule outlasted Sean King and Richard Pado, 6-2, 4-6, 11-9.

Meno beat Ryan Mirch, 6-1, 7-6 (5) for the Warriors, who earned their other point when Jerrid Cubby and Riley MacPherson rallied for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Caleb Larnerd and Mike Sova at second doubles.

Sidney (2-3) visits Chenango Valley today.

Levi Decker shot a 1-over-par 37 for host Morris in a 235-245 victory over Unadilla Valley on the back nine at Colonial Ridge Golf in Laurens.

Decker birdied holes 11 and 15. Chris Showers, who shot a 44 for the Mustangs, also birdied 11.

Brenon Maynard’s 41 paced the Storm, who received a 42 from Jarad Hanslmaier.

Morris plays Walton on Wednesday at the Delhi College Golf Course.

Junior Antonio Gomes set school records in the 100- and 200-meter dashes to lead Downsville to Tri-Valley League victories over Schenevus/Worcester, Davenport/South Kortright and Stamford.

Gomes finished the 100 in 11.6 seconds, breaking Heath Bowker’s record of 11.9. Gomes then erased Bowker’s from the Eagles’ record books again in the 200, crossing in 23.2.

Gomes also won the long jump, covering 17 feet, 8 ½ inches.

Downsville’s Steve Casciola contributed wins in the shot put (40-0) and the discus (119-0), the latter a personal-best for Casciola.

The Eagles had 94 points. S/W was next with 59, followed by Davenport/SK (50) and Stamford (20).

Schenevus/Worcester won the girls meet with 70 points - seven better than Davenport/SK. Stamford and Downsville had 42 and 35, respectively.

Bethany Gorsch earned wins in the shot put (29-6 ¾) and the discus (76-7) for S/W. Mimi Teft and Meghan Voorhees contributed wins in the 800 (2:43.3) and 1,500 (5:34.3), respectively, for S/W.

Downsville will travel to Milford on Wednesday.

Josh Harp paced Andes with wins in the discus (117-6.5) and the shot put (36-6).

Roberta Zaccagnino led the Patriots girls to a 107-23 win with victories in the 100 (14.4), the 100 hurdles (18.1) and the 400 hurdles (1:21.5).
