SOFTBALL

Delhi splits

Allie Forkey’s two-run homer highlighted SUNY Delhi’s seven-run first inning in the second game of a doubleheader as the host Broncos won, 10-9, to earn a split against Herkimer County Community College.

All of Delhi’s first-inning runs came with two outs. Kayla Edge-Santos contributed a three-run homer in the inning, helping the Broncos to a 7-1 lead on the second-ranked NJCAA team in the country.

“It was really impressive that they could turn around after losing a tough one and show the togetherness and toughness to come back,” said Delhi coach Rob Schoener, whose team rebounded from a 7-3 loss in the opener to snap Herkimer’s 23-game winning streak.

Walton graduate Forkey went 2-for-4 with a run in the first game, which featured three hits and two RBIs from teammate Heather Hansen.

The Broncos played Herkimer to a 3-3 tie after six innings in the first game, but Generals shortstop Tina Karaqi hit a three-run homer.

Delhi (8-8, 8-4) visits Onondaga CC on Saturday.

Cobleskill swept

SUNY Cobleskill dropped a North Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader at SUNYIT, losing both games by 3-1 margins.

Julia Lull went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the opener for the Fighting Tigers (13-15, 7-7), who got a hit and a run from Mattea Bagley. Erin Wadsworth struck out 10 and walked three in a four-hitter but took the pitching loss.

Wadsworth (7-6) followed with six strikeouts and two walks in a three-hitter, but Lull had Cobleskill’s only hit in the second game.

Madeline DeMilio scored and Lull singled for the Fighting Tigers, who were shut down by Fallon Reinold of SUNYIT (17-9, 11-3).
