at Milford

Milford’s Hannah Saggese technically didn’t lower her school record in the 800 meters, but she gave Wildcats coach Dave Prouty a memory he said will stick for some time.

Saggese received the baton in the 3,200-meter relay trailing a Laurens runner by what Prouty estimated at 100 meters in the three-team Tri-Valley League meet.

Saggese, a freshman, ran a 2-minute, 25.92-second — her fastest time in the 800 — to give the Wildcats a victory. The team of Gabby Sickler, Lizette Holiday, Keira Higgins and Saggese finished in 11:22.9.

“It was impressive to watch her make up that distance,” Prouty said of Saggese. “That was longest distance I’ve seen made up in my coaching career. It was probably at least 100 meters.”

Saggese holds Milford’s school record in the 800 at 2:26.58 — a mark she set last season. That will stand as a split in a relay cannot count toward a school record.

She also won the 400 (1:03.82) and the 800 (2:41.00) to help Milford to a winning total of 76 points. Laurens finished second with 72 points and Downsville had 13.

Emilie Mertz won the 100 and the 200, and Higgins contributed wins in the 1,500 and 3,000 for the Wildcats.

Rachell Murello led Laurens with wins in the 400 hurdles (1:18.18), the triple jump (29 feet, 9 inches) and the high jump (4-6). Teammate Heather White won the 100 hurdles (18.25) and the long jump (13-0).

Milford’s boys also won, compiling 65.5 points. Downsville had 58 and Laurens finished with 38.5.

Elijah Coley earned wins in the 110 hurdles (17.00) and the 400 hurdles (1:04.88) to lead the Wildcats, who received wins from Elijah Rutledge in the 1,600 (5:22.88) and the high jump (5-2).

Antonio Gomes won four events for Downsville, including a 23.24 time in the 200. He also won the 100 (11.75), the 400 (53.97) and the long jump (17-5).

The Eagles’ Steven Casciola won both throwing events, including a distance of 115-2 in the discus.

Milford will host a meet May 1.
