---- — Polar Bear 5K is Saturday

The Goodyear Lake Polar Bears will sponsor a 5-kilometer run/walk Saturday at Krol Field on Lakeshore Drive South, which is off Route 35 in Maryland.

Registration runs from 9-10 a.m. The race starts at 10:15 a.m.

Entry fee is $20. Proceeds will benefit the Polar Bear Jump Fund, which helps children, individuals and organizations in need.

The Polar Bear Run is part of the Goodyear Lake Festival, celebrating the 106th anniversary of Collier’s Dam and the creation of Goodyear Lake.

Youth fishing derby Saturday

The Oneonta City Recreation Department and the Susquehanna Bass Association will host the City of Oneonta’s 56th annual Fishing Derby at 4 p.m. Saturday at Hodges Pond in Neahwa Park.

The derby is a free catch-and-release competition open to youths ages 5-15. All participants must provide their own poles, bait/lures and a clean bucket.

Parents/guardians must complete a registration/release form for their children to be eligible to participate in the derby.

Parents may pre-register their children for the derby at the recreation office during regular business hours. Event-day registrations will be accepted from 3-3:45 p.m.

The Bass Association also will host activities during the sign-in/registration period. The derby will last for one hour. An awards ceremony will follow.

Trapshoot set for Sunday

The Bainbridge Sportsmen’s Club will host a trapshoot at 9 a.m. Sunday.

B-G modified meeting Monday

Bainbridge-Guilford will hold its mandatory meeting for fall modified sports at 6 p.m. Monday in the high school auditorium.

All paperwork necessary for participation in modified football, boys soccer, girls soccer and girls volleyball will be available at this meeting. Students in grades 7-9 are eligible to play at the modified level.

Milford athletes to report Monday

Milford Central students in grades 7-12 who are interested in playing soccer this fall should report to the nurse’s office with sports contracts and proof of physical Monday.

Girls varsity soccer players should report at 7 a.m., followed by boys varsity soccer players at 7:30 a.m., and modified boys and girls at 8 a.m.

The first practices for modified boys and girls soccer will start at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 3.

OHS to start practices Monday

Oneonta High will begin practicing for the fall sports season Monday.

Varsity swimming and junior varsity volleyball start at noon at OHS, followed by varsity volleyball at 2 p.m.

Varsity and JV teams for football (4 p.m.), girls soccer (5:30 p.m.) and boys soccer (6 p.m.) also will start practicing Monday at OHS.

Varsity and JV cross country begins at 9 a.m. Tuesday at OHS.

The first practices for modified teams will be held Sept. 4, starting with swimming at 9:30 a.m. at OHS. Modified football, boys soccer and girls soccer will start at 2:30 p.m. at OHS. At the same time, modified volleyball will open at Oneonta Middle School.

Athletes must have completed health-history questionnaires and updated physicals to participate. Forms are available at the high school and middle school health offices.

Soccer boosters to meet Monday

The OHS Boys Soccer Booster Club will briefly meet at 6 p.m. Monday at Oneonta High’s track. The meeting will take place after players arrive for the first practice of the season.

Parents of varsity, junior varsity and modified players should attend for a final update on all events for the coming season.

Unatego practices open Monday

Unatego will start varsity practices for the fall sports season Monday.

Varsity football will practice from 8 a.m.-noon at Unatego, which also will host the opening practices for varsity girls soccer (8-11 a.m.) and varsity volleyball (9-11 a.m.).

The first varsity boys soccer practice will run from 8-11 a.m. at Otego Elementary.

Modified practices start Aug. 26, with boys soccer from 3-5 p.m. at Unadilla Elementary; volleyball from 4-7 p.m. at Unatego; girls soccer from 5-7 p.m. at Otego Elementary; and football from 5-7:30 p.m. at Unatego.

Section Four meetings set

Section Four will host 2013 Fall Sports Rules Interpretation Meetings on the following dates:

Monday: Field hockey at Harpursville High, 6 p.m.

Tuesday: Soccer (boys & girls) at Oneonta State’s Morris Conference Center, 7 p.m.

Tuesday: Girls swimming at Owego Free Academy, 7 p.m.

Thursday: Soccer (boys & girls) at Tompkins Cortland CC in Dryden, 7 p.m.

Aug. 26: Soccer (boys & girls) at Seton Catholic Central, 7 p.m.

Aug. 27: Cross country at Chenango Valley High, 2 p.m.

Section Four coaches at all levels of these sports are encouraged to attend.

Atchinson Cup set for Aug. 24-25

The Oneonta Country Club will host the Otsego County Amateur Golf Tournament from Aug. 24-25.

Known as the Atchinson Cup, the Otsego County Amateur is a 36-hole competition featuring championship and net flights that will be determined by handicaps.

There will be 10 players per flight for the tournament, which is open to all Otsego County residents and non-residents who are members of Otsego County golf courses.

Entry fee is $60.

Youth football sign-ups Aug. 26

Oneonta Youth Football will hold sign-ups, check-in and equipment distribution Aug. 26 at the 6th Ward Booster Club Field on Scramling Ave., which is across from the Oneonta Boys and Girls Club.

Sign-ups and check-ins for players ages 8-10 will run from 5:15-6:15 p.m., followed by the same for players ages 11-12 from 6:15-7:15 p.m.

Players must be age 8 by Dec. 1 and cannot turn 13 before Sept. 1 to participate. Twelve-year-olds in grades 7 or higher are not eligible.
