---- — Doubleday needs a makeover

I read with interest the dilemma that the Cooperstown Hawkeyes have.

Having attended many games at Doubleday Field, I realize the team’s deficiencies as compared to other teams in the league. It is amazing that they can’t take batting practice and have very little fielding practice, as well as a field that needs much attention.

To think this is MLB’s perceived Doubleday Field. Most minor league teams in New York have taken advantage of free money and no rent for years. It is remarkable, even though the Hawkeyes are a collegiate team, that they pay rent when they are such an attraction to the visitors of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

While Doubleday Field is such an asset to the community and the Baseball Hall of Fame, I think it is time to explore fixing the field, adding appropriate concession stands and a dressing area for teams that play there.

The owners of the Cooperstown team are an important part of the mystique of Cooperstown. It would be ridiculous to have a team that relocates because Cooperstown couldn’t appease the biggest asset that a Baseball Hall of Fame has -- a team.

So, get with it Cooperstown!
