Peyton Griffiths got his junior season off to a strong start, scoring all of his team’s goals as visiting Milford defeated Roxbury, 3-1, in a non-league boys soccer game Friday.
It marked the season opener for both teams.
Griffiths, a Daily Star First Team All-Star in 2012, broke a 1-all tie with a littler under 10 minutes left.
“It was one of the nicer ones I’ve seen in a while,” Roxbury coach Tom Faraci said of Griffiths’ second goal.
Paul Van Warner sent a long ball to Griffiths, who volleyed it in on a dead sprint from 8 yards to make it 2-1.
Griffiths’ last goal came in the final minute. He also gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the first half, off an assist from Eli Rutledge.
“He’s just a good all-around player,” Faraci said of Griffiths. “He has speed.”
Roxbury tied it 9 1/2 minutes into the second half. Matt Faraci took a direct kick that Chris Clark headed into the goal from 12 yards.
“I was pleased,” Tom Faraci said of his team’s opener. “We came a long ways in the preseason and that Milford team is pretty good.”
Roxbury plays Davenport on Wednesday in a first-round game of the Stamford Mayor’s Cup.

Lawson opened the scoring 3:45 before halftime. She took a pass from Hannah Saggese and penetrated close to the end line on the right side before beating Lisa Boyke from close range. Lawson’s second goal came with 8:59 left.
“I think Milford is a fairly decent team and they outnumbered us,” Roxbury coach Lisa Faraci said, “but I think we held our own.”
