Hartwick men open season with 1-1 tie


The Red Dragons will play Saturday against Kean University at 10 a.m. and Potsdam at 2 p.m.

Hartwick drops two

Hartwick College fell to Kean, 3-1, and Potsdam, 3-0, in its season-opening matches during the Oneonta Invitational.

Hannah Strom had 13 kills and six digs against Kean, which won, 25-13, 21-25, 25-18, 25-18. Hannah Armstrong amassed 18 assists and Hartwick teammate Alyssa Zeitler contributed 11 digs.

Armstrong also set up 15 winners in the Hawks’ 25-18, 25-21, 25-17 loss to Potsdam. Strom had six kills and Christina Vitale finished with eight digs.

Hartwick continues tournament play at 10 a.m. Saturday against Emmanuel, then meets St. Lawrence at 2 p.m.

Blazer Challenge

SUNY Cobleskill opened its season with back-to-back victories Friday during the Blazer Challenge at Elms College.

The Fighting Tigers followed a 25-19, 23-25, 19-25, 25-16, 15-10 win over Albertus Magnus College with a 25-15, 25-15, 25-18 sweep of Elms.

Freshman setter Katie Yang had 27 assists and eight digs against Albertus Magnus. Senior outside hitter Amber Baker contributed 15 kills and 19 digs for Cobleskill, which received 11 digs from junior libero Kim Cordova (Oneonta High).

Yang led the sweep of Elms with 16 assists and 12 digs. Baker finished with six kills and six digs, Molly Hull had a team-high seven kills, and Cordova amassed 12 digs.

Cobleskill closes play in the Blazer Challenge against Westfield State at 11 a.m. Saturday.
