Stamford senior scores six in Mayor's Cup triumph

Margaretville 3, Onteora 2

Matt VanValkenburg scored his second goal with two seconds left in overtime to lift visiting Margaretville to a non-league victory in the season opener for both teams.

“There was a foul and we just hurried to get it and put it down,” Margaretville coach Jeremey Marks said. “I don’t even think he was trying to score. He just sent it in there and put it on goal.”

VanValkenburg’s 25-yard shot prevented a second overtime period of golden-goal play.

Kyle Short also scored for the Blue Devils, who finished with a 20-5 advantage in shots.

Margaretville hosts Davenport on Tuesday.


Hannah Wood scored a second-half goal, but host Sidney opened its season with a Section Four loss.

Kelsey Decker stopped 14 shots for the Warriors, who were outshot, 21-3.

Brianna Ciganek and Dani Cronk scored for Maine-Endwell, which also held an 11-0 advantage in penalty corners.

Sidney will compete in the Sherburne-Earlville Tournament on Friday.

GOLFat Windham CC

Dan Marino and Skylar Schoonmaker shared medalist honors with 2-over-par 37s as Windham cruised to a 167-225 Delaware League home victory at the Windham Country Club.

Ryan Sluiter’s 50 paced Andes/South Kortright.

Windham hosts Hunter-Tannersville back at Windham CC on Thursday.

at Shephard Hills GC

Shannon Sprague shot a 53 to lead host Roxbury to a 235-253 Delaware League golf victory over Jefferson.

James Quagliano paced the J-Hawks with a 54.

Davenport’s Gavin Cobb, playing as part of an incomplete team, earned medalist honors at 48.

Roxbury (3-3) plays Margaretville at Hanah GC on Thursday.

at Belden Hill

Matt Johnson shot a 37 and Tyler Graham had a 39 to lead host Harpursville to a 206-226 MAC victory over Sidney.

“They worked real hard over the summer,” said Harpursville coach Paul Volkert, whose team improved to 3-0 this season.

Jon Gorshack shot a 41 and Nick Meno had a 45 to lead Sidney (1-1).

Harpursville plays Bainbridge-Guilford on Thursday.
