OHS rolls in opener

Brittney Herrick had 12 kills, three aces and three digs, and Rachel Griffing contributed nine kills and five aces to lead Oneonta High to a 25-5, 25-20, 25-17 Southern Tier Athletic Conference volleyball victory over visiting Chenango Forks on Wednesday.

It was the season-opener for both teams.

“I was definitely pleased with what I saw,” OHS coach Lee Ferrara said. “Brittney Herrick is obviously flying and hitting the ball as well as anybody and Rachel Griffing is doing a nice job of controlling the ball on the court and getting kills on the outside.”

Herrick will play volleyball at Division I Siena next season.

Krissy Wells contributed 18 assists and the Yellowjackets finished with 14 aces.

“One of the things I was pleased with was our serving,” said Ferrara, whose team is coming off a 14-5 season in which it advanced to the STAC and Section Four Class B finals. “We just served hard. They weren’t all necessarily aces, but they were scrambling to get the ball back over, which is easy to turn into offense.”

OHS (1-0, 1-0) will play a Class C school this season.

The Yellowjackets will travel to Norwich on Friday.

Taylor Butler finished with five digs for the Warriors.

Delhi (0-2) received six aces and three kills from Gigi Cappiello, and four aces and six assists from Sierra Bedient.

The Bulldogs will host Walton on Friday.
