Oneonta will become a hotbed for college soccer this weekend as Hartwick College and Oneonta State will host the annual Mayor’s Cup tournaments, starting today.
Hartwick’s men will open play in the Division I Tournament at 5 p.m. today at Elmore Field against Robert Morris University. Cornell and Detroit Mercy follow at 7:30 tonight.
The D-I men’s tournament will conclude Sunday, with Robert Morris meeting Detroit Mercy at noon and Hartwick facing Cornell at 3 p.m.
The Hawks have started the season 0-1-1, following a 1-1 draw at Fairfield last Friday with a 2-0 loss Monday at 20th-ranked Syracuse, which is coached by Hartwick graduate and former coach Ian McIntyre.
Cornell is ranked 22nd following last season’s Ivy League championship and the Big Red’s ensuing appearance in the NCAA D-I Tournament. Robert Morris beat the Hawks, 2-1, last September. Detroit Mercy won the Horizon League’s regular-season title last year.
Hartwick is looking for its 19th Mayor’s Cup title since the tournament’s inception in 1976. The Hawks last took the cup in 2007.
The Hawks also will play part of the Division III women’s Mayor’s Cup at Elmore Field. Oneonta State’s Red Dragon Field also will host Mayor’s Cup games.
On Saturday, O-State will play RIT at 1 p.m. at Elmore Field, followed by Hartwick and John Carroll at 3:30 p.m. On Sunday, Oneonta (1-1-0) will face John Carroll at noon. Hartwick (0-0-1) then meets RIT at 2:30 p.m.
Oneonta High graduate Cami Cleaveland scored her first college goal last weekend, helping Hartwick to a 1-all tie against Marywood in the 10th annual Erinn K. Brozman Cup.
Also at Red Dragon Field this weekend, Oneonta State’s men will host a Mayor’s Cup tournament featuring the top-ranked D-III team in the country.
