O-State is ranked 24th among D-III programs and will start tournament play against No. 1 Messiah, the defending national champion, at 4 p.m. today. That game will follow a 1 p.m. opener between ninth-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Franklin & Marshall.
“I can’t imagine a better Division III men’s tournament in the country this year,” Oneonta coach Iain Byrne said. “It is a testament to the reputation and history of the Mayor’ Cup that we have been able to attract national champion Messiah, perennial power Franklin & Marshall, and NCAA tournament regular Claremont, all the way from Los Angeles, for this year’s tournament.”
O-State fell to F&M, 2-1, and tied Messiah, 0-0, last season. The latter was the only non-win of the 2012 season for Messiah, which won its ninth NCA D-III title in the last 13 seasons.
All Mayor’s Cup games are free and open to the public.
