Oneonta State took the top-ranked Division III men’s soccer team into overtime Friday, but the Red Dragons didn’t last much longer.

Joshua Wood scored the winning goal 2 minutes, 15 seconds into sudden-victory as defending NCAA D-III champion Messiah escaped with a 2-1 victory in the opening round of the Mayor’s Cup Tournament at Red Dragon Field.

Wood redirected a cross from the left flank by Jack Thompson with a header, beating outstretched goalie Daniel DeBottis for the winner in front of 1,261 fans. Wood’s goal helped Messiah avenge a scoreless draw at O-State last season, which marked the Falcons’ only non-victory of the 2012 season.

Mike Kovach gave Messiah (3-0) the lead in the 58th minute, lining a shot into the upper-right corner of the goal. Kovach took a pass from Brian Ramirez and beat a defender to set up the shot, which went in off the left hand of DeBottis.

Alex Winiarski scored the equalizer in the 69th minute for the 24th-ranked Red Dragons (1-1). Sophomore Brian Bartichek started the scoring play with a steal just outside the box. He sent the ball across to classmate Dylan Williams, who one-touched the ball to Winiarski for the tying goal.

DeBottis and counterpart Brandon West finished with three saves apiece. Messiah held an 11-7 advantage in shots, including a 6-4 edge in shots on goal.

Oneonta will face Franklin & Marshall at 4 p.m. Saturday in the final round of the Mayor’s Cup at Red Dragon Field, where Messiah will play ninth-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 1 p.m. Saturday.

F&M defeated CMS, 4-0, in Friday’s first game.
