Kellen Komenda struck out nine and walked none in a one-hitter to lead host Unatego to a 6-0 Midstate Athletic Conference baseball victory over visiting Afton on Tuesday.
“His slider,” Unatego coach Frank Microni said when asked why Komenda was effective. “He placed his fastball and threw his slider for strikes and he was ahead in the count all night long.”
Komenda had a no-hitter with two outs in the seventh. Afton’s Jesse Nedman then hit a grounder up the middle that just avoided diving shortstop Phil Youngs for the Crimson Knights’ lone hit.
Komenda faced two batters over the minimum.
Alex Walley had two hits, including a three-run homer to left-center in the third inning that increased the Spartans’ lead to 5-0.
Quinn Barnhart’s RBI single in the first inning gave Unatego a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
Jon Wingate also had two hits for the Spartans (12-3, 9-0), who will travel to Unadilla Valley today.
