Komenda throws one-hitter to lead Unatego baseball

Kellen Komenda struck out nine and walked none in a one-hitter to lead host Unatego to a 6-0 Midstate Athletic Conference baseball victory over visiting Afton on Tuesday.

“His slider,” Unatego coach Frank Microni said when asked why Komenda was effective. “He placed his fastball and threw his slider for strikes and he was ahead in the count all night long.”

Komenda had a no-hitter with two outs in the seventh. Afton’s Jesse Nedman then hit a grounder up the middle that just avoided diving shortstop Phil Youngs for the Crimson Knights’ lone hit.

Komenda faced two batters over the minimum.

Alex Walley had two hits, including a three-run homer to left-center in the third inning that increased the Spartans’ lead to 5-0.

Quinn Barnhart’s RBI single in the first inning gave Unatego a 1-0 lead in the second inning.

Jon Wingate also had two hits for the Spartans (12-3, 9-0), who will travel to Unadilla Valley today.

RS 20, Worcester 4

Ben Smith homered twice, including a two-run shot during Richfield Springs’ 12-run first inning, to lead the visiting Indians in the Tri-Valley League.

Smith also had a three-run shot in the second inning and finished 3-for-4 with five RBIs.

Luke VanRiper also had three hits for RS.

Bobby Rundblad went 2-for-4 for Worcester (4-6, 4-5), which will travel to Schenevus on Thursday.

Edmeston 19, Franklin 8

Nate Truax’s three-run, opposite-field homer to right in the fourth inning gave host Edmeston a 10-6 lead en route to a Tri-Valley League victory.

Garrett Gott went 3-for-4 with four runs and three RBIs for the Panthers, who received two hits from Clayton Lyon.

Winning pitcher Mike Clark struck out 12, walked four and allowed four hits over six innings. He allowed one earned run.

Edmeston (10-2, 10-0) will play at Unadilla Valley on Thursday.

Dalton Kaminsky struck out nine in a one-hitter to lead Walton to a road victory in the Midstate Athletic Conference.

Joe Sinistore had three hits and three RBIs, and teammates Trevor Zandt, Derek Mead and Steven Klein each contributed two hits in the victory.

Gilboa scored 12 runs in the first four innings to cruise to a non-league victory over Delaware League foe South Kortright.

Hunter Grace had three hits and three RBIs, and teammamte Cole Fancher had three hits to lead the offense for the Wildcats. Nick Losito (four RBIs), Cole Weingates (two RBIs) and Mike Smith (two RBIs) had two hits apiece in the victory.

Ryan Sluiter had three hits, and teammates Dylan Cole and Griff Metzko had two hits apiece for South Kortright.

Gilboa (4-4) will host Davenport on Thursday.

Jacob Darling led Schenevus with two hits and two runs scored.

Schenevus (1-9) hosts Worcester on Thursday.

Margaretville scored 10 runs in the top half of the first inning and cruised to a road victory in the Delaware League.

Kyle Short went 4-for-5 with seven RBIs and hit for the cycle to lead the Blue Devils, who received three hits and four RBIs from winning pitcher Mitch Hull.

“Defensively, they were very solid, they made every play behind Hull today. Hats off to them,” Roxbury coach Greg Funck said.

Sam Nash had a home run and two RBIs to lead Rockets.

Roxbury (5-4, 2-3) will play at Stamford on Friday.

Corbin Palmer went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a home run to lead Bainbridge-Guilford to a Midstate Athletic Conference victory at home.

Palmer, whose homer cleared the right-field fence, also scored two runs.

Lucas Butcher contributed three RBIs, and teammates Timmy Parsons and Cole Webb finished with two hits apiece. Parsons also scored three runs. Winning pitcher Austin Bauerle struck out five allowing four hits and gave up no earned runs.

Austin Taylor and Mason Alford had hits and scored for Unadilla Valley.

B-G (9-2, 7-2) play at Delhi today.

Greg Mattice went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead visiting Stamford to a Delaware League win. Winning pitcher Matt Anderson struck out eight over five innings to improve to 5-2. James Vlahakis also went 2-for-4 with a two-run triple in the fifth inning. Teammate Geoff Mattice also had two hits with three RBIs.

James Quagliano scored three runs and went 3-for-4 to pace Jefferson.

Stamford (8-2, 6-1) will host Roxbury on Friday.
