Oneonta High’s boys held off Holland Patent and Sidney while the host school’s girls cruised to victory Friday night in the Yellowjacket Invitational at OHS.
The boys compiled 76 points _ four better than Holland Patent and six ahead of Sidney.
Perhaps the top highlight for OHS was a winning discus effort of 141 feet, 9 inches by Mitchel Couch, who edged Sidney’s Austin Dean’s effort of 139-5.
The Yellowjackets also received a victory from their distance-medley relay team of James Longo, Mat Robinson, Jacob Depauw and Ben Gollin. That foursome finished in 11 minutes, 13.07 seconds.
OHS pole vaulter Cameron Hazard cleared a winning height of 11-6.
The fastest event of the night came in the 800, where Norwich standout Matt Murray won in 1:54.41. Sidney’s Austin McCarroll crossed in 1:58.97, followed by Norwich’s Nuri Harper (2:00.68) and Oneonta’s Gollin (2:01.73).
In the shot put, Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton’s Pedro Aparacio won with a distance of 46-2, just ahead of Sidney sophomore Dean, who put the shot 45-10 ¾.
Oneonta triple jumper Aaron Murphy finished second with a distance of 42-5 in an event won by West Canada Valley’s Jack Minasi at 45-0 ¾.
Oneonta’s Longo and Robinson finished second and third, respectively, in the 400 hurdles. Holland Patent’s Noah Robinson won in 59.01, followed by Longo (1:00.01) and Robinson (1:00.96).
Cooperstown’s Joe Harmon won the mile in 4:43.87.
On the girls side, OHS had 139 points to beat runner-up B-G/A by 70.
Oneonta’s Jennifer Jelic and B-G/A Julia Knapp exchanged 1-2 finishes in the 400 and 100 hurdles.
Jelic won the 400 hurdles in 1:06.31 as Knapp finished in 1:07.35.
In the 100 hurdles, Knapp crossed in 15.45 to Jelic’s 15.89.
The Yellowjackets’ Brittney Herrick and Natalie Vanderlaan-Meyering placed 1-2, respectively, in the high jump. Both cleared 4-10, but Herrick won on fewer misses.
Abby Picinich earned wins in the 100 and 200 for the Yellowjackets, winning the former in 13.44 and the latter in 27.40.
Taylor Hitchcock of OHS won the mile 5:45.55.
Other area winners were: Cooperstown’s Kristin Ratliff in the steeplechase (8:17.66); Unatego’s Katrina Clark in the 800 (2:26.91); and Walton’s Kim Kehr in the 400 (1:02.30).
