Cooperstown stays perfect in softball

Senior pitcher Nicole Cring struck out five in a three-hitter Thursday, leading the Cooperstown softball team to a 9-1 Center State Conference victory at Sauquoit Valley.

Cring (RBI), Ellen Vibbard (RBI) and Jennifer Flynn (two RBIs) had three hits apiece for CSC Division III champion Cooperstown, which is the state’s third-ranked Class C team.

Alannah Haggerty contributed two hits for Cooperstown (18-0, 12-0), which is off until the start of the Section Three Class C Tournament.


Cooperstown 7, S-V 6

Park Summers’ RBI single in the top of the seventh inning came with two outs and scored James Johnson as Cooperstown earned a Center State Conference win on the road.

Johnson set up the decisive run with a triple.

Sawyer Haney and Ethan Bliss contributed three hits and two RBIs apiece for Cooperstown. Bliss hit a two-run double in the first inning and Haney drove in two runs with a single in the third.

Cooperstown (9-6, 8-4) avenged a 4-2 loss earlier this season to Sauquoit Valley, which won the CSC D-III title. Chris Hillman paced SV (10-7, 10-2) with two hits and three RBIs.

“This gives us a good boost going into sectionals,” Cooperstown coach Frank Miosek said.

Norwich 14, UV 13

Rob Wheeler’s RBI single with none out capped a walkoff victory for Norwich, which earned a non-league win at home.

Colby Griffin went 2-for-3 with three RBIs for the Purple Tornado, who received two doubles and five RBIs from Chris Trevisani.

Kyle King went 30for-4 with two runs and two RBIs for the Storm (8-10), who received two runs and two RBIs in a 3-for-5 effort from Nate Shackelton.

Unadilla Valley is seeded 12th for the Section Four Class C Tournament and will visit No. 5 Trumansburg for a first-round game at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Deposit 9, Morris 0

Zack Decker’s two-run homer in the sixth inning capped the scoring and highlighted Deposit’s non-league win at home.

Devon Schmitz went 2-for-4 with two runs for the Lumberjacks (9-8), who are the seventh seed for the Section Four Class D Tournament and will host No. 10 Jefferson in the first round at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

At the same time, 11th-seeded Morris will visit No. 6 Edmeston in the opening round. Edmeston will play Milford at 5 p.m. today at Oneonta State for the Tri-Valley League title.

Todd Randall went 2-for-3 to pace the Mustangs (8-7).


at Woodgate Pines

Teddy Trosset shot a 2-over-par 36 on the back nine of the Woodgate Pines Golf Club, but Cooperstown dropped a non-conference match to host Adirondack, 170-173.

Matt Frevele contributed a 44 for Cooperstown.

Josh Howland, Tyler Althoff and Jordan Millard shot 42s to pace Adirondack.
