Ruff, Beers on BCANY top 50 list

Staff Report

Local high school juniors Mariah Ruff and Jordan Beers earned recognition as two of the top 50 girls basketball players in the state, as voted on by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York, Inc.

Both point guards competed in New York State Public High School Athletic Association tournaments that followed the 2012-13 regular season, and both were selected by the New York State Sports Writers Association as First Team all-state players in their respective classes.

Ruff led Oneonta High to a 20-2 season that ended with a 55-53 loss to eventual Class B state champion Irvington in the state-semifinal round. She averaged 17.6 points for the Southern Tier Athletic Conference champion Yellowjackets, who won their record sixth straight Section Four crown.

Beers led area girls with 26.7 points per game for Franklin, which capped a 20-1 season with a 51-46 loss to Oriskany in a Class D state quarterfinal. Beers guided Tri-Valley League winner Franklin to its first Section Four championship.

Irvington seniors Lexi Martens and Brittni Lai, who will play Division I college basketball next season, also were honored.

Other Section Four girls on the top 50 list are Harpursville’s Miranda Drummond, Horseheads teammates Amanda Schiefen and Jen Chalk, Maine-Endwell’s Julie Yacovani, Owego’s Rachel Merrill and Seton Catholic Central’s Angelica Hauer.

Earlier this year, the BCANY honored Ruff and Beers as its Section Four Class B and Class D Players of the Year, respectively. Ruff also was a top 50 selection as a sophomore, which marked her second season with the Yellowjackets. Ruff played varsity basketball at Andes in seventh and eighth grade.

The top 50 list, known as the “Best of BCANY,” recognizes players from each NYSPHSAA section, as well as Catholic, private and public New York City schools.

Players are only eligible if their coaches are BCANY members.

BCANY’S Board of Directors select top 50 teams for boys and girls basketball based on nominations submitted by member coaches. No area player appears on the BCANY’s top 50 boys team this year.
