Oneonta High freshman Taylor Hitchcock moved to the head of the class Monday at Vestal.
Hitchcock won the Section Four Class B title in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, finishing in 8 minutes, 5.2 seconds to automatically qualify for the Section Four State Qualifiers on May 30.
Teammate Jamie Keown finished sixth in the same event, at 9:08.3. OHS coach Dave Forbes said the top three finishers automatically advance to the State Qualifiers, which also will be hosted by Vestal.
Logan Mancuso paced Oneonta’s boys with a second in the 3,000 steeplechase. Mancuso ran an 11:20.33 for his automatic berth to the State Qualifiers. He finished behind Susquehanna Valley’s Alex Whitnet, who won in 11:02.3.
Vestal hosted all five Section Four classes Monday for boys and girls steeplechase and pentathlon events. Forbes said OHS did not enter either pentathlon.
The Yellowjackets will compete in the rest of the Section Four Class B Tournament at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Windsor.
SOFTBALLCooperstown is top seed
Undefeated Cooperstown received the No. 1 seed for the Section Three Class C-1 Softball Tournament, which begins today.
Cooperstown (18-0) has a bye as the top seed and will host a C-1 quarterfinal at 5 p.m. Thursday against No. 9 Mount Markham (8-10) or No. 8 Thousand Islands (7-8).
The Section Three C-1 championship game is set for May 29, at a time and site to be determined.
The C-1 and C-2 winners will play for the overall Section Three Class C crown at 2 p.m. June 1 at Le Moyne College.
BASEBALLCooperstown seeded 4th
Cooperstown has a first-round bye as the fourth seed for the Section Three Class C-2 Baseball Tournament, which also opens today.
Cooperstown (9-6) will host No. 5 Pulaski (6-6) in a C-2 quarterfinal at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The winner of that game will visit top-seeded Bishop Grimes (16-4) in the semifinals.
The C-2 championship game is slated for May 27 at Rome’s DeLutis Field, which also will host the C-1/C-2 crossover on May 29.
