Oneonta youngster wins pitch, hit & run competition

Staff Report

Oneonta resident Mariano Hernandez III finished with the highest points total during the Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run Sectional Competition, which ran Sunday at Damaschke Field in Oneonta.

Competing in the boys 11-12 age-group, Mariano amassed 1,022 points to win the gold medal. Binghamton’s Trey Green took the silver with 907 points, followed by bronze winner Dylan Jacob of Walton at 786.

The points totals for Mariano and Trey were the top two overall during the competition, which welcomed local qualifiers ages 7-14 from the Southern Tier. Conklin’s Edwin Lavin had the third-highest total, winning the boys 13-14 division with 904 points.

Jaelynn Donlon of Bainbridge won the girls 7-8 gold with 384 points -- 197 more than silver medalist Marissa Barlow of Hamden.

As sectional champions, Mariano and Jaelynn may qualify for the next stage of competition. The scores of sectional winners from across the state will be compared to make up the field for the Team Championships, which will take place at Yankee Stadium or the Mets’ Citi Field later this year.

Other local medalists were Oneonta’s Cole Platt (boys 9-10 bronze, 514 points); Walton’s Azellyn Lane (girls 7-8 bronze tie, 150); Franklin’s Johanna Iversen (girls 9-10 silver, 269); Walton’s Ashlyn Lane (girls 9-10 bronze, 175); and Franklin’s Maria Burch (girls 13-14 bronze, 555).
