Oneonta State’s Jimmy van de Veerdonk earned honorable mention All-America status in Division III from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association on Tuesday.
It marks the second straight year van de Veerdonk has been recognized by the USILA. Last year, he was selected to the Second Team.
A senior midfielder, van de Veerdonk also was picked to play in the USILA/Lax World North-South Division III All-Star Game. That game will start at 3 p.m. Friday at Cabrini College in Radnor, Pa.
Van de Veerdonk leaves O-State’s top faceoff man in the program’s 33-year history. Van de Veerdonk won 570 of 939 faceoffs. He is the Red Dragons’ all-time leader in wins and attempts, and holds the single-season record of 205 faceoffs won, which he set in 2012.
Van de Veerdonk is also the school’s leader in groundballs with 386. His 130 groundballs this spring represents a single-season O-State record.
Van de Veerdonk also scored 96 goals and 38 assists over four years with the Red Dragons.
O-State’s Crawford to play for U.S.
Oneonta State’s Alyshia Crawford will represent the United States during a European All-Star basketball tour that starts Thursday in Vienna, Austria.
USA Athletes International selected Crawford, who will start her senior year at O-State this fall, to join nine other players from across the country for the tour. The USA All-Star team is made up of women from all NCAA divisions and will compete in Austria, Italy and the Czech Republic from Thursday through June 1.
The team will practice one day in Vienna, then take part in the three-day Pentacost Tournament. After that, it will play a single game in Brno, Czech Republic, before heading to Venice, Italy.
“I feel very honored to have even been selected for this experience,” Crawford said in a media release from O-State. “I’m just glad that I can go play overseas and develop more as a player before my senior season. I’m excited to be competing with athletes from all over the country and from different NCAA divisions.
“I’m thrilled that I will be doing two of my favorite things at one time, playing basketball and traveling,” she continued. “I’m thankful to have the opportunity to represent our college and our country with the letters USA on my chest.”
USA Athletes International organizes college and All-Star teams to play all over the world in 15 different sports.
O-State player honored
Oneonta State senior field hockey player Ashley Johnson earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-District III At-Large First Team, the college announced Monday.
Johnson will appear on the national ballot, which will be voted upon by the National Academic All-America Committee of CoSIDA and released June 4.
Johnson is a three-time NFHCA National Academic Squad selection. She also made the SUNY Athletic Conference’s All-Academic Team and Commissioner’s List.
In 2012, Johnson had her best season with 30 points, on nine goals and a team-best 12 assists. The team MVP helped the Red Dragons to a 12-7 season and a berth in the SUNYAC Tournament this past fall.
