Sidney falls in Mirabito title game

The Daily Star

Mara Kohlbach scored 1 minute, 1 second into play and Windsor’s girls soccer team went on to beat the host school, 3-0, Saturday in the championship game of the Mirabito Tournament at Sidney.

After penetrating close to the end line, Windsor centered a pass in front of the goal. Sidney keeper Jolene Krom got a hand on it but couldn’t clear it. Sharree Baker then sent a pass to Kohlbach, who scored from close range.

Shortly after that goal, Sidney had a chance to tie, but Katie Kirk’s shot deflected off the cross bar.

Krom made six saves in the first half but didn’t play the second half. Sidney coach Jody Gravelin said Krom suffered a head injury during warmups.

“She didn’t tell me,” Gravelin said of Krom’s injury. “She never said anything. She’s our rock back there, but we couldn’t risk it being a head injury.”

Gravelin said she’s hopeful Krom will return for Sidney’s Midstate Athletic Conference opener Wednesday at Walton. Gravelin added that Krom’s injury will be monitored closely.

Michaela Crandall made five saves in the second half for Sidney.

Baker and Emily Berkheiser scored in the second half for Windsor.

“We had three scrambles in front of the net and were not able capitalize,” said Gravelin, whose team was outshot, 14-9. “We did not show what we’re capable of, but I give Windsor credit for capitalizing on their opportunities.”

Sidney is 1-1.
