Hartwick men lose at No. 20 Syracuse


O-State opened Saturday by taking the first two games against eventual champion Kean before falling, 23-25, 18-25, 25-18, 25-22, 15-10.

Sisters Erica and Jill Darpino led Oneonta’s attack with 15 and 12 kills, respectively. Erica also had seven blocks. Both Darpinos earned all-tournament recognition.

Becca Horton had 22 assists and Kristina Pelaccio finished with 18 digs for O-State.

During a 25-19, 25-19, 18-25, 22-25, 15-10 win over Potsdam, Jill Darpino had 10 kills. Erica Darpino and Hannah O’Neil contributed nine kills apiece, and Pelaccio had 22 digs.

O-State will travel to the Bomber Invitational at Ithaca College this weekend.

Hartwick College (0-4) dropped both of its matches in the Oneonta Invitational on Saturday, falling to Emmanuel College, 25-22, 20-25, 25-17, 25-16, and St. Lawrence, 25-17, 25-9, 26-24.

Blazer Challenge

Senior outside hitter Amber Baker and freshman setter Katie Yang earned all-tournament honors for Cobleskill in the Blazer Challenge at Elms College.

Baker averaged 2.3 kills and 3.0 digs per set over 10 games. Yang averaged 5.0 assists and 2.78 digs per set.

Cobleskill won both of its matches Friday before falling Saturday to Westfield State College, 25-18, 25-11, 25-15.

Cobleskill will play at Green Mountain College at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

CROSS COUNTRYRensselaer Invitational

Oneonta State’s men and women won team titles Saturday in the Rensselaer Invitational at Saratoga State Park.

The Red Dragons’ men finished with 31 points, one better than the host school. O-State’s women had 30 points — 19 ahead of runner-up Plattsburgh.

It was the first event of the season for O-State.

Sophomore Jim Bernstein finished third to lead the men’s squad. He completed the 3.04-mile course in 16 minutes, 1 second. Junior Andrew Bohunicky and sophomore Mike Didas finished fourth and fifth, respectively, for the Red Dragons.

Senior Danielle Kennedy placed fourth to lead O-State’s women. Kennedy finished in 19:18. Junior Brianna McLoughlin, freshman Mary Kate Bida, sophomore Alyssa Drapeau and Marielle Genovesi finished in spots 5-8, respectively.

The Red Dragons will host the Early Bird Invitational at Fortin Park on Sept. 14.
