Cobleskill freshman wins first race

Freshman Evan Quinones earned his first college cross-country victory Saturday, winning the Steven A. Warde Invitational men’s race for host SUNY Cobleskill.

Quinones completed the 5.2-mile course in 28 minutes, 43 seconds for the Fighting Tigers, who scored 43 points to place second out of eight teams.

Quinones topped a field of 72 runners. Utica won the team title with 28 points to complete a sweep as the Pioneers’ women took first with 26 points.

Cobleskill’s women placed second out of six teams with 60 points. Freshman Taylor Tommell finished fifth out of 65 runners by covering a 3.1-mile course in 19:43.

Lang Invitational

Hartwick College’s men and women each placed last out of four teams during the season-opening Harry Lang Invitational on Saturday at Colgate University. The other squads featured Division I athletes from Syracuse, Colgate and Buffalo.

Matt Loignon paced Hartwick’s men with a 21:40.30 over the 6,400-meter course to place 18th. Teammate Gavin Jenkins finished four-hundredths of a second behind him.

Freshman Victoria Hathaway led Hartwick’s women in the 4,200-meter run. She placed 16th in 16:59.60.

VOLLEYBALL

Delhi drops two

Raven Worthing had nine kills and 16 digs to lead host Delhi in a 26-28, 25-22, 27-25, 25-12 loss to Broome during a tri-match Saturday.

Hailie Chandler contributed 12 kills for the Broncos, who also fell to Hostos, 19-25, 13-25, 25-21, 25-19, 15-11.

Worthing had six kills and 19 digs against Hostos, who fell, 25-16, 25-19, 25-19, to Broome.

Delhi (1-3) visits Columbia-Greene on Wednesday.

HONORS

Field Hockey

Oneonta State junior Kelcy Forbragd received Offensive Player of the Week honors for field hockey from the SUNY Athletic Conference on Monday.

Forbragd helped the Red Dragons (4-0) to two victories last week, including a 4-3 win over 18th-ranked Rochester. Forbragd had two goals against Rochester and two more in a victory over Hamilton.

Forbragd has five goals and one assist for a team-leading 11 points.

Football

The Empire 8 Conference selected Hartwick senior defensive end R.J. Roth as its Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

Roth had 12 tackles (nine solo), four tackles for losses and one sack in Hartwick’s 33-7 season-opening rout of Husson on Saturday. He helped limit Husson to 134 offensive yards.

Roth missed the 2012 season because of an injury and switched from linebacker to defensive end this season.
