SUNY Delhi’s Bob Backus was named the 2012-13 NJCAA Region III Athletic Director of the Year.
Backus is entering his sixth year as the Broncos’ AD.
“This award would not be possible without all of the support and dedication of the athletic department and campus community members,” Backus said in a media release sent by the school. “I’m humbled and honored to receive this recognition. It truly is a great day to be a Bronco.”
A committee of Region III athletic directors selected Backus. Region III is made up of 26 colleges from the Mid-State Athletic Conference, the Western Athletic Conference and the Mountain Valley Conference, of which Delhi is a member.
Backus was selected by his peers for his dedication to his institution and the region. He is acknowledged for hosting numerous regional and national championship events in a first-class manner. Region III also cited Backus for administering SUNY Delhi’s athletic program with the highest level of integrity.
Backus has spent 20 years at the college. The cross-country teams he coached before becoming AD were perennially among the best at the NJCAA Division III level.
He serves on Region III’s standards and ethics committee and is chair of championship events, cross country and track and field Committees.
Backus oversees an athletic department that has hosted NJCAA Division III championships in men’s basketball, track and field, and cross country.
The Clark Field House is home to the Floyd L. Maines Arena, the CADI Fitness Center and a mini-dome. The college’s athletic facilities also include the Kunsela Hall Aquatics Center, The College Golf Course, an eight-lane 400-meter outdoor track, playing fields, racquetball/handball courts, and indoor and outdoor tennis courts.
