Oneonta's Lorenz, Kelby still perfect

But tennis team loses fourth straight

Riley Lorenz and Emerson Kelby continued to dominate singles play Thursday, but the Oneonta High tennis team suffered a 4-3 Southern Tier Athletic Conference setback to visiting Owego at Wilber Park.

The Yellowjackets (7-6) dropped their fourth straight match as Owego avenged a 4-3 home loss on May 3. That date marked the first time this season that Lorenz lost a game as Tommy West fell, 6-2, 6-3, to the OHS junior.

On Thursday, Lorenz improved to 13-0 at first singles with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of West. Lorenz has beaten his foes by a combined score of 156-9, which included a 112-0 start to the season.

Eighth-grader Kelby also remained perfect this spring, moving to 12-0 at second singles with a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Cezar Georgeson.

OHS earned its third point at first doubles as Josh Moss and Alex Levenstein cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Alex Prince and Tyler Stickler.

The Jackets followed a 5-2 loss to Maine-Endwell on May 4 with 4-3 losses to Chenango Valley, Norwich and Owego. Lorenz, Kelby and the doubles tandem of Moss and Levenstein have accounted for all of Oneonta's team points during that stretch.

OHS also fell, 4-3, to Seton Catholic Central on April 23, when Lorenz, Kelby and Kyle McCue earned singles victories. McCue has not played since May 4, when he fell, 6-3, 7-5, 10-5, to Maine-Endwell's Kyle Fedorchak at third singles.

Lorenz and Kelby will represent OHS during the Section Four Class B Tournament, which runs May 20-21 at Owego. Oneonta also will enter two doubles teams in the sectional tournament in Moss and Levenstein and Ben Coe and McKenna Rowe. Moss and Levenstein played together for the first time this season against CV on May 6.

Moss, who is Oneonta's only senior, won the sectional doubles title last season with Kelby.
