---- — ONEONTA — Jordan Gutierrez gave Oneonta High a lift Friday night.

Junior guard Gutierrez scored 11 of his game-high 22 points in the first quarter of his varsity debut, leading the host Yellowjackets to a 59-32 rout of Seton Catholic Central in the first round of the Anthony C. Drago Tournament.

“Jordan got off to a good start,” said Jerry Mackey, coaching his first game since leading the OHS girls soccer team to the Class B state championship Nov. 17. “Once we got things going, we pushed the tempo in the first quarter.”

Gutierrez was a huge part of the push, fueling a 13-0 run to close the first quarter with three of his five three-point field goals. His first three tied the score at 10 and his second gave OHS the lead for keeps in its season opener, which also counted in the Southern Tier Athletic Conference standings.

A mid-range jumper by Gutierrez extended Oneonta’s cushion to 15-10, and sophomore Albert Odero — another first-year varsity player for OHS — made it 17-10 on a layup.

Gutierrez then capped the first-quarter scoring with another three-pointer, prompting Seton coach Chris Sinicki to yell to his team, “I told you No. 23 can shoot the ball!”

“I was just in the zone,” said Gutierrez, who also hit three-pointers in the second and third quarters.

His efforts helped OHS to a 32-19 advantage at halftime. Gutierrez and Paul Bischoff then scored five points apiece in the third quarter, when the Yellowjackets essentially put the game out of reach by outscoring the Saints, 17-2.

Bischoff and Brock Eichler finished with 10 points apiece for OHS, which hit nine threes as a team. Eichler made two shots from behind the arc, where Bischoff and George each connected once.

‘‘We like the start,” Mackey said. “It’s a league win and a Drago Tournament win. It’s good to have some energy back in this gym.”

The Yellowjackets advanced to the championship game against another STAC rival as they’ll face Johnson City at 4:15 p.m. Saturday. JC downed Unatego of the Midstate Athletic Conference, 98-73, in the first Drago Tournament game earlier Friday.

Cody O’Neil’s eight points paced the Saints, who will face Unatego in the Drago consolation game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
