OHS coach Mackey is a class act
An example of good sportsmanship occurred in the last minute of the hard-fought Class B girls soccer state championship game between Oneonta High and Marcellus last month.
A ball kicked by one of the OHS players toward the Marcellus goal looked like an easy save for the Marcellus goalie and the game would go into overtime play. However, the wet field conditions caused the ball to slip from the Marcellus goalie and trickle slowly into the goal, giving OHS the state championship.
One of the best things I have seen in all sports was when the OHS coach Jerry Mackey ran to the distraught, weeping Marcellus goalie to help console her before celebrating the win and the state championship with his own team. That was a “Class Act.”
