---- — Taryn More scored in the first half of Sunday's Class B state championship game, but the Oneonta High girls soccer team gave up the last three goals of a 3-1 overtime loss to Greece Odyssey at Cortland State.
Rachel Walsh tied the score with less than nine minutes left in regulation for 2011 state runner-up Greece Odyssey (18-3-1), which received overtime goals from Liz Dohr and Jessica Marlowe.
Section Five champion Greece Odyssey won its first state title with back-to-back victories over the state's top two teams in Class B, according to the New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports rankings.
Greece Odyssey avenged a 4-0 loss to Section Two's Schalmont in the 2011 state final with a 3-2 semifinal victory Saturday at Cortland High. OHS advanced with a 1-0 semifinal defeat of Section Eight's Cold Spring Harbor at Tompkins Cortland Community College.
Schalmont (20-1) and Oneonta (18-3-1) entered championship weekend as the co-No. 1 Class B teams in the state — four spots ahead of Greece Odyssey.
The Section Four champion Yellowjackets were attempting to win the program's first state crown. OHS last played for a state title in 2004, when it lost the Class A final, 2-0, to Section Eight's Rockville Centre South Side. The 2004 season marked Jerry Mackey's first as Oneonta's head coach.
OHS also made numerous state-tournament appearances under longtime coach Helen Sandford, who led the Jackets to 15 sectional championships in 30 seasons. Sandford retired with a 440-121-25 all-time record following a 21-1-1 season in 2003, which ended with a 1-0 double-overtime loss to Marcellus in the Class B state final.
