Laurens boys top Hornets in opener

Staff Report

Is there such a thing as November Madness?

There is in Laurens, where the Leopards boys basketball team opened its season Tuesday with a 56-53 overtime defeat of Harpursville.

“The intensity was like a March game in sectionals,” Laurens coach Andy Carr said of his Class D program’s non-conference victory over Class C’s Harpursville. “It was pretty intense.”

Sophomore swingman Mitchell Barra, a 6-foot-3 junior varsity call-up last season, scored a varsity-high 22 points for the Leopards, who rallied from five points down after three quarters to tie it at 47 by the end of regulation.

“We had to play from behind in the fourth quarter,” said Carr, whose Tri-Valley League team went 4-12 last season and failed to qualify for sectionals. “We had to battle back most of the second half, and the last few seconds (of regulation), nobody could get a decent shot off.”

Laurens scored the final points of regulation with 1 minute, 19 seconds left, then outscored the Hornets of the Midstate Athletic Conference, 9-6, in the extra period.

Jared Conklin, a 6-1 guard, scored five of his 10 points in overtime.

“We dominated the boards, took a little better control and pressed them,” Carr said. That’s how we got back into the game. In overtime, we controlled the boards, created some turnovers and took care of basketball better.”

Ryan Holmes hit two three-pointers en route to 11 points for the Leopards, who will visit Bainbridge-Guilford for a non-conference game next Tuesday. B-G also is a Class C team that plays in the MAC.

“These games will get us ready for league play and give us points toward sectionals,” Carr said. “They’re just going to make us better.

Mason Dean’s 19 points paced Harpursville. Dean also made a game-best three three-pointers.
