Tournament MVP Nyafia Blakney scored 11 of her game-high 26 points in the third quarter to lead Fallsburg to a 48-40 girls basketball victory over Downsville in the championship game of the Walton Tip-Off Tournament on Thursday.

“She was tough,” Downsville coach Courtney Hoyt said of Blakney, a forward.

Downsville (1-2) trailed by seven at halftime, but Blakney’s play in the third quarter helped Fallburg extend its lead to 40-23 after three quarters.

All-tournament selection Kaileen Townsend scored 12 points and had six steals to lead the Eagles. Ginny Gilkeson contributed seven points and nine rebounds.

Leigha Latourette also made the all-tournament team for Downsville, which will play host to South Kortright on Tuesday.

Walton 33, Delhi 18

All-tournament pick Cortney Miller had her first varsity triple-double as Walton won the consolation game of the Walton Tip-Off Tournament.

The senior guard scored 18 points to go along with her 12 rebounds and 10 steals.

“She has scored more points in a game, but she has never had an all-around game like that,” Walton coach Gary Backus said. “She was extremely active tonight.”

Kaitlin Haynes, also an all-tournament selection, scored six points to lead Delhi.

Mikaelan Cucciarre-Stuligross contributed nine points for Walton (1-2), which hosts Delhi on Tuesday in the Warriors’ first league game.

Richfield Springs 35, Sharon Springs 23

Vanessa Miller and Kaity Richvalsky scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, as the host school advanced to the championship of its Richfield Springs Tournament.

Miller and Ashley Fuller each contributed 11 rebounds for the Indians, who outscored Sharon in each quarter. Richvalsky also had seven steals and three assists.

Cherry Valley-Springfield and Edmeston will play tonight with the winner advancing to face RS in the championship at 8 p.m. Saturday.
