O-State men, women fall at home

STAFF REPORT

Geneseo State sophomore Gordon Lyons scored 19 points to lead four Blue Knights in double figures in a 70-63 SUNY Athletic Conference men’s basketball victory Friday at Oneonta State.

Zach Mager had 19 points and eight rebounds to lead the Red Dragons (1-6, 0-3).

Geneseo (5-3, 2-0) led by 11 points on two occasions in the second half. Lyons scored 11 of his 19 points in the second half. He also had a game-high 13 rebounds.

Trailing, 46-35, with 12 minutes, 31 seconds remaining, O-State went on a 14-5 run to pull to 51-49. Freshman Jack Dignan scored nine points in the run and finished with 14 to match his season high.

Geneseo pushed its lead back to six points on back-to-back baskets before Mager scored five straight points to cut the Blue Knight lead to 55-54 with just under four minutes to play.

The Blue Knights built its lead back to nine points with 34 seconds left.

Sophomore Frankie Kelly contributed 10 points and six assists for O-State.

Senior Ryan Riefenhauser scored 18 points for Geneseo.

The Red Dragons will host Brockport at 4 p.m. Saturday.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Geneseo 49, O-State 39

Kristin Pappalardo scored a game-high 18 points, but host Oneonta State couldn’t overcome 23 percent shooting from the floor in a SUNY Athletic Conference loss.

The Red Dragons shot 14-for-59 from the floor.

Still, a steal and a layup by Kelly Mulligan with 4 minutes, 5 seconds left pulled O-State to 39-35.

Geneseo (6-1, 2-0) quickly restored its lead to nine points in a run that included two three-pointers by Allison McKenna.

Sarah Longto contributed 10 points for O-State (4-5, 1-2), which will host Brockport at 2 p.m. Saturday.

St. Lawrence 58, Hartwick 51

Maria Foglia scored a game-high 18 points, but Hartwick College’s six-game winning streak was snapped with a non-conference road loss.

A three-pointer by Foglia with 3 minutes, 37 seconds left gave Hartwick a 47-42 lead, but St. Lawrence answered with 14 straight points.
