Yellowjackets cruise past Norwich

STAFF REPORT

Mariah Ruff showed Friday that in addition to being a standout basketball player, she’s a quick healer as well.

The reigning Daily Star Player of the Year scored a game-high 13 points in leading Oneonta High’s girls to a 46-27 Southern Tier Athletic Conference basketball victory over visiting Norwich.

OHS coach Matt Miller said Wednesday after the Yellowjackets’ 52-41 victory at Windsor _ a game Ruff missed with a sprained right thumb _ that he didn’t expect his point guard to be back until next week.

“She originally wasn’t supposed to be cleared to play until next Friday,” Miller said. “The doctor was surprised she healed so fast. She said she felt really good. She had complete range of motion. She went in today and got cleared.”

Ruff scored nine points in the first half in helping the Yellowjackets to a 25-13 halftime lead.

Ruff’s backcourt mate, Dani Nicosia, contributed nine points and five assists.

“She was running the floor and did a great job all around,” Miller said of Nicosia. “She was attacking the basket. She was beating her defender and drawing defenders. She played great for us.”

Miller also singled out the efforts of Sierra Sangetti-Daniels, who scored eight points on 4-for-5 shooting from the floor and grabbed nine rebounds.

Hayley Dower hit a pair of three-pointers for the Jackets (3-0, 2-0), who’ll travel to Chenango Valley on Friday.

Unatego 60, Oxford 19

A Unatego squad that returned five starters from last season’s team that advanced to the second round of the Section Four Class C tournament opened its season with a convincing home victory in the Midstate Athletic Conference.

Senior Casey Manzarero scored seven of her game-high 16 points in the opening quarter when the Spartans took a 17-2 lead.

Marissa Woodard, the lone underclassman in Unatego’s starting five, contributed 14 points, and Robin Foster and Cassidy Newman had 11 points apiece.
