OHS, B-G/A girls highlight invitational

An Oneonta High foursome and a Bainbridge-Guilford sophomore earned first-place finishes Saturday during the Bomber Invitational for indoor track and field at Ithaca.

Juniors Mary Buzzanca and Alexandra Sakoulas book-ended a victorious 1,600-meter relay team that included freshman Taylor Hitchcock and senior Jennifer Jelic as the OHS quartet finished in 4 minutes, 23.49 seconds. Elmira finished second to the Yellowjackets, in 4:26.50.

Julia Knapp paced Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton by winning the long jump at 17 feet, 1 inch. Mackenzie Todd of Dryden placed second (16-3.5) and Jelic finished third (15-8.5).

Knapp also had a runner-up finish in the 55 hurdles, crossing in 9.02 seconds – .30 ahead of fifth-place Jelic. Cienna Simon of Jamestown won the event, in 8.64.

Knapp ran the anchor leg for the Bears’ 1,600 relay team as well. B-G/A finished fourth, in 4:30.91.

Gilbertsville-Mount Upton senior Eddie Cotton paced area boys by tying for second in the long jump (20-11.5). Vestal’s Mike Egotanda won the event at 22-4.5.

Oneonta’s Ben Gollin placed third in the 1,600 (4:35.77) and fifth in the 600 (1:29.06) during the non-scoring event.

300 meters: 1, Abbey Yatsko (Dryden) 42.58; 6, Mitilda Knapp (BGA) 45.19.

1,500: 1, Melinda Wheeler (Elmira) 5:01.85; 4, Taylor Hitchcock (OHS) 5:12.91.

55 hurdles: 1, Cienna Simon (Jamestown) 8.64; 2, Julia Knapp (BGA) 9.02; 5, Jennifer Jelic (OHS) 9.32.

1,600 relay: 1, Oneonta (Mary Buzzanca, Taylor Hitchcock, Jennifer Jelic, Alexandra Sakoulas) 4:23.49; 4, BGA (Emalee Fico, Amanda Greenwood, Katherine Curtis, Julia Knapp) 4:30.91.

Long jump: 1, Julia Knapp (BGA) 17-1; 3, Jennifer Jelic (OHS) 15-8.5.

Shot put: 1, Brooke Bonney (Norwich) 37-11; 6, Samantha Mullineaux (Sidney) 29-9.5.

Watkins Relays

Cooperstown’s boys won three of nine events en route to a runner-up finish in the nine-team Bobb Watkins Christmas Relays on Saturday in Watertown.
