---- — Crappie Derby set for Saturday
The Almost-Annual New York State Crappie Derby is scheduled for Saturday in Whitney Point.
Entry fee is $2 for ages 13-and-older and free for those 12-and-younger.
Free parking is available at Dorchester Park in Whitney Point as well as the Kiebel Road extension on the west side of Whitney Point Lake.
The last Crappie Derby took place in 2011 and drew roughly 2,000 anglers and an additional 3,500 spectators. The purse that year was approximately $13,500.

OTC to host winter events
The Oneonta Tennis Club will host the following events in 2014.
Doubles qualifiers (Saturday): Top eight in each division (men’s & women’s) will compete in the tournament, three sets with three different partners. Top four in each division will then team up for semifinals and finals. No fee for those in all-inclusive membership category. For others, cost is $20 for the qualifiers and $40 for the tournament.
O-State tennis fundraiser (Feb. 8-9): Fundraiser tournament for Oneonta State’s varsity tennis teams.
Local umpires to meet
Local chapters of the Schohanna Board of Baseball/Softball Umpires, Inc., will hold their first business meeting of the season at 10 a.m. Sunday at Lecture Hall 5 in Oneonta State’s Hodgdon Instructional Resource Center.
Anyone interested in becoming an umpire for the upcoming high school/summer seasons should attend. Classes start Feb. 5 for baseball and Feb. 6 for softball.

Pitching camp to start Sunday
The Oneonta Pitching Camp for softball players ages 8-18 starts Sunday at the Oneonta Boys and Girls Club. The camp runs Sundays through March 2.
Session I is for advanced pitchers and runs from 1:30-3:30 p.m. To qualify, pitchers must know the fundamentals and mechanics of windmill pitching. The cost is $210.
Session II is for intermediate and beginning pitchers. It runs from 3:30-4:30 p.m. and costs $90.
The camp is run by John Seedborg and Oneonta High softball coach Randy Brockway.

O-State softball dinner Feb. 1
The Oneonta State softball team will host a spaghetti dinner fundraiser from 5-8 p.m. Feb. 1.
The 6th Ward Athletic Club in Oneonta will host the dinner, which costs $8 per person.
O-State softball clinic Feb. 23
Oneonta State’s softball team will host a winter clinic for girls ages 10-and-older from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 23 at Alumni Field House.
Cost is $45 and pre-registration is highly recommended.

Hall accepting intern applications
The National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown is accepting applications for next year’s class at the Frank and Peggy Steele Internship Program for Leadership Development.
Applications for the Class of 2014 will be accepted through Jan. 31, 2014. The Steele Internship Program will provide students the chance to join the Hall in a 10-week summer internship.
To be considered for the program, students must be enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program at a college or university, having completed at least their sophomore year. Fifteen intern positions are available.

Club accepting deer hides
The Bainbridge Sportsmen’s Club and Chenango Federation are accepting donations of deer hides.
Proceeds will be used to send youths to DEC camps.
Deer hides may be dropped off at the club, which is located at 23 Pearl St. in Bainbridge.
