David Wright could do no wrong Sunday.
Wright went 6-for-6 with eight runs and two RBIs to lead Oneonta Post 259 to a Legion baseball doubleheader sweep of Sherrill at Oneonta High.
Wright’s 3-for-3 outing in the opener included a double and five runs for the Green Wave, who cruised to an 18-0 victory. He followed with another 3-for-3 effort in the second game, scoring three times and driving in two runs to lead Oneonta to a 17-4 mercy-rule win in five innings.
Zach Pidgeon tripled, doubled and scored three times in a 3-for-3 showing during the opener, which featured two hits and four RBIs by Noah Sheehan, as well as two hits and three runs from Matt Horne.
Winning pitcher Matt Bitzer (3-2) struck out five and walked one in a five-hitter.
Oneonta’s 17 hits included a triple by Zach King and doubles from Ben Moxley, Mark Giallanzo and Ben Payton.
Pidgeon also tripled and doubled in the second game, when he drove in five runs and earned the pitching victory with a three-hitter for the Green Wave (11-8). Pidgeon moved to 2-0 on the mound this season.
Wright tripled and had one of Oneonta’s four doubles in the second game. Moxley (three RBIs) and Connor Tavarone also doubled for Post 259, which dropped two games to Clonan at Sauquoit Valley High on Saturday.
Clonan scored four unearned runs against Moxley (2-2) in Saturday’s opener, including three in the final inning. Moxley struck out 10 and walked three in a four-hitter but gave up a walkoff single to Rob Slavinski with two out in the seventh. Oneonta made both of its errors in the seventh, setting up Slavinski for a bloop single to right field that plated Zack Thomas as the decisive run.
Winning pitcher Aaron Lopollico three-hit Post 259, which got a two-out, two-run single from Sheehan that gave the Green Wave a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning.
